Cohen Alley was a dead end alley, used for dumping, defecation and other activities....
In 1989, Smith and Lazer organized, "Performance in the Gutter," day long multidisciplinary performances for Cohen Alley and developed a "garden" and community commons "plan"in collaboration with The San Francisco League of Urban Gardeners.
In 2000, Smith/Lazer leveraged a $1.00/year lease with the City of San Francisco. In 2001, the Cohen Alley Gate was installed with assistance by MANy who will be listed in a separate page about Cohen Alley, but in particular, could not have been accomplished without the help of Mohammed Nuru, Mayor Willie Brown and Jeff Brown.
In 2003-4, Smith/Lazer initiated GreenLab which hosts collaborative projects, classes, seminars, experimental work and artist in residencies. AIRS included Julia Glanville, Sarah Lewison, Sham Sainz, Mary Conrad, Ricardo Richey, Per Schumann and Malte Zacharias...
In May 2009, completed several additional public projects and renamed and dedicated Cohen Alley as "The Tenderloin National Forest."
